Chapter 16

Wes

After Quinn walked off in a huff, I went inside the bar and decided to distract myself by cleaning up from the night before. My shift didn’t start for another hour, and initially, I had brought Quinn around the bar early so she could meet Bea and Elaina. Now that she was gone, I channeled my frustrations into sweeping the floors until they were spotless. I was just getting started, actually, when the door to the stairwell opened, and out walked Bea. She was wearing just sweatpants and a t-shirt, and looked fantastic. I nearly dropped the broom and took her into my arms, but then I noticed the wary look on her face and could tell something was wrong.

“Hey,” I said, frowning. “Good morning. Is everything alright?”

“Everything’s fine,” she said. “There’s just… uh… I was hoping that we…” She glanced at the broom. “Wait, were you starting work early?”

I shrugged. “The place was still pretty messy after last night, so I thought it would be a nice surprise for you to come downstairs and see everything spick and span. I didn’t plan on you coming down so soon before opening, though.”

She smiled. “That was very considerate. Thank you.”

“No problem. Were you about to say something a second ago?”

“I—um.” She walked over to the counter and picked up a rag. “I was just going to say I’m happy to help you clean.” She began wiping down the bar. “That’s all.”

“Are you sure? Because you started to say something before I told you that I came in early to get some cleaning done. So, unless one of the spells you’ve been working on is a spell for reading minds, I’m not really sure why you would’ve said that.”

She sighed and threw the rag over her shoulder. “Fine. You caught me. That wasn’t what I was going to say. What I actually came down here to talk to you about was—was—”

She wouldn’t look me in the eye, and her voice dropped down to nearly a whisper when she finally continued. I couldn’t make a word out.

“Huh?” I walked over to the bar. “Say that again?”

“I eavesdropped on your conversation with Quinn just now.”

This time, the words were loud and clear, and they hung in the air between us as neither of us spoke for a few seconds. Bea had just heard everything Quinn and I talked about. She’d heard us mention the pack and shifting… Which meant…

My stomach dropped.

“So I guess that means you know,” I said after a pause. “You know the truth about me and where I come from.”

She didn’t appear noticeably frightened, which was a good sign. And she hadn’t run away screaming when she learned the truth. That could mean one of two things—either Bea didn’t care that I was a shifter, which would be ideal, or she had no idea what a shifter even was, which would be less ideal.

“Yeah,” she said. “At least, I think I do. Elaina and I are pretty sure we put all the puzzle pieces together even though we didn’t have the full context.
